Normally, I’d have a Weekend Reading post for you all today, but since I just did that for the week, I decided to write out about something instead:
We have a little detached (but fully finished) shed in our backyard that we call the Tiki Hut. It’s probably a little bigger than 10ft x 10ft, but it’s a great little space. Yesterday, our school announced that due to the coronavirus, our campus would be closed for two weeks starting Monday. We’ll still have classes online, but there will be less hours in our school day and our lessons will be far more asynchronous. (This means though, that I will have more time to post throughout the weeks!) I decided to turn the Tiki Hut into a little classroom for Reed (my 10 year old brother) and myself. We had all of the furniture (there’s actually nothing new in the space!), so I just cleaned and reorganized. I think it will really make our online schooling way easier to do.
Here, I’m presuming, is where most of our work will get done. I set our chargers to go right up through the lamp-cord holes in the desks, and it worked out perfectly. These IKEA desks we’ve had for a really long time, and they’ve held up surprisingly well (for IKEA). They are small, but we don’t need to have much in these desks (I have a larger one in my bedroom) and I think they are the perfect size. This filing cabinet (old, but I love this) ended up between the desks as a separator because I needed somewhere to put it, and I contact-papered my daily schedule to it. The whiteboard was in our guest room from my mom’s old job, and I moved it in here to inspire a more school-like feeling.
Desks, filing cabinet (similar), whiteboard, IKEA chair (old, I have this upstairs), Pottery Barn chair (old)
The Cozy Corner
There were two mattresses down here, and I didn’t feel like moving them, so I made them a “couch” to sit on. I think I’ll take my conference calls here (with my iPad propped up on a stool) for classes, or read or even nap here during the day. Because we are going to be in this room a lot, I wanted to have a comfier space to be in—a change of scenery (or sit-tery, maybe?), if you will. I think it’s important to move around (and I’m used to having seven classes a day so...), and moving my workspace is enough, I think.
Okaayyy....so let’s ignore the cringe-worthy header for this part of our Classroom 🙈! The rest of the Tiki Hut/ Our Online Schoolroom is pretty open, which is extremely important for my PE work during these weeks. I have to do 30 minutes of exercise each morning, and because it’s been so rainy, I think I’ll be doing a good amount inside (Tabatas, HIIT Drills, etc.). I put together a bit of clothing too so that everything is together down here.
I’m obviously waaay to excited about this online school thing, as sad as the circumstances that made it happen are. I’m really so bummed all of this is happening and I want everyone to be safe! I will try to keep my blog positive and I won’t talk too much about the virus (maybe info on what we’ve been doing lately, though). Be safe everyone!
